  • Arlen's Basics Blog: The Different Ways Guitarists Learn May 17, 2012
Now that I am in the throes of working in another “new” guitarist to play alongside me in my band, I can’t help but take note of his unique way of learning, which in turn makes me think also of how others learn. Everyone certainly has their own patterns of learning songs, licks, ideas and arrangements, and there’s no question that each way of learning is lit […]
  • Arlen Roth's Blog: Young, Up-and-Coming Players! May 17, 2012
I have been truly amazed at the incredible amount of hot young players there are in the world of guitar these days, and there never seems to be a gig or clinic I do where I end up meeting some Mom or Dad with their “child prodigy!” There’s no doubt there are lots of them out there, and the sad thing is that if they really don’t make it and make a “splash” at […]
  • Arlen's Basics Blog: Bringing the "Live" Quality to the Studio! May 10, 2012
It’s the age-old dilemma about how to re-create or capture the magic of your live sound when in the relatively sterile studio environment. In several cases during my recording career I have benefitted from incredible recording “spaces”, where this has been less of a problem for sure. Most recently, recording my “Toolin’Around Woodstock” album with the late, […]
  • Arlen's Basics Blog: Helping Students Compose! May 8, 2012
One of the issues it seems many students, especially fairly advanced ones eventually always bring up is that of composing. More precisely, it’s very often me helping them to compose, thereby teaching composition by default, and of course there are even times where I share the major part of the composition to begin with! This has happened with some very hi-pr […]
  • Arlen Roth's Blog: Doing TV Interviews May 7, 2012
Lately, due to my new album coming out soon, and the need for publicity, etc., I’ve been doing a fair amount of radio as well as TV interviews. Yesterday I did a very local, but still very professionally produced interview for a local TV station, and it was a lot of fun for sure! The interviewer was a real pleasure to deal with, and she kept me nice and rela […]
  • Arlen's Basics Blog: Learning from Your Mistakes! May 3, 2012
This “learning from your mistakes” is really a Cardinal rule when it comes to being a guitar player, and certainly when it also comes to being in the field of music. Unfortunately, many of us haven’t learned that much from our mistakes, as in many aspects of life, both political and non-political, but it usually is easiest when applied to simply playing the […]
  • Arlen Roth's Blog: Getting the Word Out about Your Band May 2, 2012
Spreading the word about your band, or your solo act for that matter, can be so escalated in these times of fast “one click” communication compared to the old days. It almost makes us forget how “word of mouth” is still the most important way to get the word out. After all, in the end it will still depend on how people talk about you, […]
  • Arlen's Basics Blog: Theory Versus Ear Training? May 1, 2012
The question of these two approaches to music learning and which is better has long baffled students and teachers alike, and let’s face it; we are always students and teachers anyway! The way we learn is in my opinion, really based on who we are, and what makes us tick, and that can be a million different permutations, for sure! I know that this also m […]

Slow Blues in E - Fingerpicking Guitar Lesson - Bad Blues Part 1 - TABLATURE available

Many people have been asking me to do a lesson on Bad Blues, a slow bluesinstrumental I recorded in the past. So here it is. It’s based on the playing of Baby Tate, a wonderful Carolina bluesman, and Lightinin’ Hopkins, the texas blues giant. Here’s the original version www.youtube.com It’s a typical “monotonic bass” or “dead thumb” blues instrumental with a bonanza of licks and interesting ideas you can use. So here’s the complete song first, after that I teach the introduction. I’m in standard tuning and playing in the key of E Four more lessons, each lesson teaching a verse, will follow. Here is the link to my previous version www.youtube.com It’s slightly faster than the version I teach Here’s the link to the next (second) lesson www.youtube.com TABLATURE I tabbed this song out (intro and ALL the verses) Although I explain all the positions in the lessons you’ll learn faster and more easely (less rewinding) with the tab at hand. To order go to my website www.daddystovepipe.com and click on the Paypal logo. Cost €7.50 (about $10) PROMO ! If you order the tab you get a free bonus, tab to another great slow blues in E with lotsa jazz influences Here’s the link to that song www.youtube.com
